What Is Purpose? A Different Way to Take a Look

March 31, 20253 min read

We hear a lot about “finding your purpose,” don’t we?
It’s usually wrapped in big ideas—changing the world, doing what you love, following your passion. All noble pursuits. Yet if you’re a corporate professional navigating client meetings, networking events, or giving presentations in your role, the idea of purpose might feel… out of reach.

So, what if we looked at purpose differently?

Instead of seeing it as some far-off destination or lightning-bolt moment, I like to think of purpose as the alignment of three things:
👉 Who you serve
👉 How you serve
👉 And the confidence to use your voice to do it

It’s not just what you do—it’s how you show up to do it.

From “I’ll Never Be Able to Do This” to “I Love This”

Years ago, I took a job where public speaking was a major part of the role. I was responsible for giving presentations to companies about how their employees could access counseling services through their employee assistance program.

Let me tell you: I was not excited about getting up in front of a room full of people.

I vividly remember sitting in the back of a conference room, watching my boss deliver a flawless presentation. She had it all—confidence, clarity, connection with the audience. And I remember thinking, “There’s no way I’ll ever be able to do that.”

But I didn’t quit. I learned the material. I practiced. I showed up again and again. And a funny thing happened—I discovered I actually enjoyed it. I loved engaging with the audience, answering questions, and helping people understand the resources available to them. That sense of connection and impact lit something up in me. I found a sense of purpose not because I was perfect at public speaking, but because I was willing to grow into it.

Confidence Isn’t the Absence of Fear

Many of my clients are in sales or technical roles. They’re smart. They’re capable. They’re confident when talking one-on-one with a client or team member. But when it comes time to speak up in a meeting, introduce themselves at a networking event, or hit “record” on a video? Cue the overthinking, sweaty palms, and awkward silence.

That doesn’t mean they’re not good at what they do—it means they haven’t yet learned how to bring their confidence to bigger moments.

Here’s the truth: confidence doesn’t mean never being nervous. It means knowing who you are, who you serve, and how you serve—so that even when nerves show up, you still show up.

Purpose in Public Speaking

Most people don’t think of public speaking as part of their purpose. But when you look at it through the lens of alignment, it absolutely is.

If you believe in what you do…
If you know you make a difference…
If you care about serving people with your knowledge and skills…

Then public speaking is simply one of the most powerful tools you have to deliver on that purpose. Whether you’re proposing an idea to a client, reporting at a leadership meeting, or introducing yourself on LinkedIn, your voice is your value in action.

You Already Have the Tools—Let’s Use Them

Here’s the good news: You don’t need to become someone else to be a confident speaker. You already have everything you need. My work is about helping you take the confidence you have in small moments and expand it into the moments that feel bigger.

Through mindset coaching, practical strategies, and preparation techniques, I help professionals like you stop overthinking and start communicating with clarity, confidence, and authenticity.

You’re already serving people. You already have purpose. Now it’s time to use your voice to reflect that.
